RESPECTED ATTORNEY SEEKS REPUBLICAN NOMINATION IN MARCH 2020 PRIMARY
Richard J. “Rick” Veenstra today announced his candidacy for the position of circuit judge for the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit Court of DuPage County, Illinois. He will seek the Republican nomination for the office in the March 17, 2020 primary election.
A lifelong DuPage County resident, Rick is the Corporation Counsel for the City of Aurora. Before becoming Aurora’s chief legal officer, Rick was a 13-year veteran of the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. His career as an Assistant State’s Attorney included time as a line prosecutor handing hundreds of traffic, misdemeanor, and felony cases as well as Deputy Chief of the Civil Bureau, managing the office’s representation of county government and serving as principal counsel to the DuPage County Board.
After graduating from Elmhurst College, Rick earned his law degree from DePaul University’s College of Law. He contributes to the legal profession by volunteering as a director of DuPage County Bar Association and previously served as its general counsel and chair of its local government section. Rick is also a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and represents lawyers in the 18th Judicial Circuit as a member of the Association’s Assembly. He is a member of the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy.
Active in the community, Rick is a former township trustee and municipal planning and zoning commissioner. He was also a longtime elected precinct committeeman and former legal counsel to the DuPage County Republican Party.
